KIDSART 2005
Curated by Meridith McNeal and Hawley Hussey
May 31 - June 18, 2005
KIDSDAY: Thursday, June 9

KidsArt 2005
KidsArt 2005
Throughout the season exhibitions at the Rotunda Gallery serve as an inspiration for the discussion and hands-on art projects for children from kindergarten through high school. KidsArt is a survey of the exhibition season as seen through the eyes of New York City’s children and includes examples of artwork from all of the Rotunda’s education programs: class visits, museum outreach programs, after school programs and professional development workshops for teachers and administrators. From larger than life paintings of original superheroes to a wave-shaped installation created in response to the tsunami in Southeast Asia to a new map of New York - KidsArt showcases outstanding, diverse projects by kids of all ages. Other projects range from self-portraits based on the style of Chuck Close and Frida Kahlo, to collages inspired by Romare Bearden, to sculptures, installations and murals focusing on architecture, math and language arts.

KidsDay 2005
A highlight of the exhibition is the annual KidsDay celebration, which will take place this year on June 9. Held on the Brooklyn-Queens Day school holiday, families can enjoy a full day of free workshops, tours and performances in the gallery and throughout Brooklyn Heights. KidsDay is co-presented by the Rotunda Gallery, the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Transit Museum and the Brooklyn Historical Society. The all-day festivities include a variety of art-making workshops in the Gallery on the theme "Brooklyn Cultural Diversity" for artists of all ages, and other free events around Brooklyn Heights, ending with a cookies and juice reception, courtesy of Morgan Stanley, at 3pm in the Gallery. Reservations are required for many of the KidsDay programs, and a schedule of events is available by calling 718-875-4047 ext. 11.

Fifth graders from P.S. 171 in Cypress Hills created colorful and larger-than-life paintings of original superheroes, based on Brooklyn artist Marie Roberts' Coney Island Sideshow Banners.
Seventh and eight grade students at I.S. 49 in Bushwick took digital portraits of one another, learning how to review an image on a digital camera and upload it to a computer. Each student selected one image to enlarge and transfer onto canvas paper squares using a grid technique. The class then selected one photo to enlarge together. The finished squares were painted and assembled into this Chuck Close-inspired portrait mosaic.
